Earlier today, Edison International released a new paper, Countdown to 2045: Realizing California's Pathway to Net Zero. The new paper updates and expands SCE's 2019 analysis, Pathway 2045, to help the state achieve its net-zero carbon emissions goal.
Among its findings, 90% of vehicles and 95% of buildings will run on electricity, and electricity demand will rise by 80% by 2045. The new paper discusses how we can affordably meet state goals and calls for policy changes and technology developments to meet the challenges. It also calls for expanded electric infrastructure and further deployment of clean energy technologies to support rising electricity demand.
A key driver for this updated analysis is Assembly Bill 1279, which made the state's carbon-neutral goal into law in 2022 and established a deeper requirement for direct greenhouse gas reductions.
"The stakes are higher than they have ever been for expanding the electric system to meet decarbonization goals safely, reliably, and affordably," said Pedro Pizarro, president and CEO of Edison International. "While today's available technologies can achieve significant reduction, policies must encourage greater investment in emerging technologies and enable more options to meet California's net-zero goal."
