  • 15 Dec 2022 by SoCalGas

SoCalGas is excited to announce that on December 15, 2022, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved its request to track costs for advancing the first phase Angeles Link, a proposed green hydrogen pipeline system that could deliver clean, reliable, renewable energy to the Los Angeles region. SoCalGas is grateful to the CPUC and to leaders from labor, environmental organizations, government, and the private sector who are working together on the critical building blocks of California’s clean hydrogen economy.

Proposed in February of this year, Angeles Link would serve hard-to-electrify industries like dispatchable electric generation, heavy-duty trucking and industrial processes. As contemplated, Angeles Link would deliver green hydrogen in an amount equivalent to almost 25% of the natural gas SoCalGas delivers today. In serving those hard-to-electrify sectors of the economy, Angeles Link could:

    • Displace up to 3 million gallons of diesel fuel per day, or 1 billion gallons annually, and enable conversion of up to four natural gas power plants to run on clean hydrogen.

    • Eliminate nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) equal to removing 3.1 million cars off the road annually.

    • Generate billions of dollars in new clean energy investments in the LA Basin and create thousands of new union jobs.

The Phase One activities will include preliminary engineering and design, studies on supply, demand, possible end users, pipeline configuration and storage solutions, environmental considerations, workforce planning and training, robust stakeholder engagement, and an analysis of project alternatives.

In its final decision, the CPUC stated, “the public interest is served if SoCalGas begins conducting a feasibility study of the Project immediately.” The agency also asked SoCalGas to join members of the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (ARCHES) in support of the State of California’s application for a share of $8 billion in available federal funds to support regional clean hydrogen hubs.

This decision is an important milestone for Angeles Link and speaks to the growing consensus among policy makers and experts that clean fuels will play a significant role in California’s clean energy transition. California has some of the boldest climate and clean air goals in the nation, and Angeles Link aligns SoCalGas’ scale, 150 years of expertise in service, and its highly skilled workforce with the clean energy and environmental policies that will shape this century.

SoCalGas is a leader in sustainability, having announced its aim to have net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045—the first large natural gas utility in the United States to do so. As part of SoCalGas' ASPIRE 2045 Sustainability Strategy, the company is developing an industry-leading portfolio of clean fuels demonstration projects with partners from private industry and the public sector. More than a dozen hydrogen pilot projects are already underway across the company.

SoCalGas looks forward to supporting California in its application for federal hydrogen hub funding and continuing the robust, transparent, and collaborative engagement process that has been a hallmark of Angeles Link from the start.

Powerful business solution integrates life and business planning while reducing tax burden

Santa Clarita, Calif. — Santa Clarita wealth management firm Vance Wealth announced a new business offering designed to help business owners simplify their planning approach to life and business.

    simplify logo

Simplify365 is a business planning system that helps owners carve out the time they need to focus on what matters most while simultaneously taking advantage of specific tax-saving opportunities. By implementing a few critical strategies, business owners can adopt a more purposeful planning routine, optimize their payroll structure, improve their retirement savings, while striving to reduce their tax burden and keep more of the money they earn.

“Running a business can be very rewarding, but it’s also very consuming. What affects your business affects your life and vice versa,” explained John Vance, the firm’s founder, president, and visionary. “Eventually, you get to a point where you ask yourself: ‘How can I simplify my business and my personal lives in order to achieve more of my big-picture goals?’ Answering that question is where this program started.”

After working with many business owner clients, the firm’s wealth advisers were able to identify planning opportunities where more support and guidance were needed.

“It’s hard not to get caught up in the day-to-day grind of running your business,” Vance said. “By taking a dedicated monthly planning day, we’ve found that business owners can approach life and business with greater purpose. The result is better physical, mental, and emotional health at work and home, allowing you to show up as the best version of yourself.”

The Simplify365 Planning Day gives business owners a highly structured agenda to increase clarity, review goals, and help find solutions to their most pressing issues each month.

By taking this planning day in the comfort of their own homes – and away from their busy workplaces – business owners may be able to take advantage of the Augusta Rule. Also known as IRC Section 280A(g), this piece of tax code allows homeowners to legally rent out their home to their business for up to 14 days per year, resulting in a sizable tax deduction.

While the planning day and Augusta Rule deduction set the foundation for consistent checkpoints throughout the year, a comprehensive tax plan ensures these monthly sessions are working toward the ultimate goal: maximum profitability and minimum tax liability over the business owner’s lifetime.

In nearly 20 years of service to business owners, the firm has identified several tax-optimization strategies that can be applied to key areas of business, from payroll to retirement. These strategies are analyzed for each individual client and put together in a comprehensive, proactive tax and retirement plan that aims to reduce the client’s long-term tax burden.

“Tax prep is overwhelming, especially for business owners. If you’re like most, you sign your tax return without really knowing if all the data has been picked up accurately. That’s where we can help,” Vance said. “We work with your accountant striving to make sure you’re taking advantage of every opportunity and working toward long-term tax savings – instead of just looking at how to save taxes one year at a time.”

Simplify365 is ideal for business owners who want a more purposeful approach to their time and planning, so they can achieve more of their goals in life and business.

“I’ve been on the business owner journey for almost 20 years now, and I’ve had to find solutions to these same challenges,” Vance said. “Everything I’ve learned along the way is built into this program. It’s been many years in the making.”

    NEWS RELEASE
    DATE: October 25, 2022
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SCV Water Hosts Virtual Bridgeport Community Listening Session on Nov. 2
Attendees will learn more about a water treatment facility planned along the bike path south of Bridgeport Park

SANTA CLARITA – SCV Water invites the community to the Virtual Bridgeport Community Listening Session. Attendees will learn more about the planned groundwater treatment facility as well as hear updates from the August Community Listening Session.

This is the second of two listening sessions and takes place virtually on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 6 to 8 p.m. Attendees are asked to register by Friday, Oct. 28, at bit.ly/swellsNov2. The Zoom link will be provided to all registered attendees. Community members who cannot attend the event can learn more about the project and participate in a survey to provide feedback by visiting www.yourSCVwater.com/swells.

During this virtual event, SCV Water’s team will answer questions from attendees, as well as share key information, including:
    •    4-1-1 on the project’s impacts and benefits
    •    How SCV Water is restoring groundwater availability due to PFAS
    •    Updates from the August Community Listening Session

“We invite community members to join us to learn more about this ambitious treatment project that will restore local water affected by PFAS substances,” said SCV Water’s Senior Engineer Orlando Moreno, P.E. “A local, reliable water supply for our customers is critical, especially during the drought.”

When constructed, the $16 million groundwater treatment plant, which will be located on Bridgeport Lane across the street from Bridgeport Park, will remove PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) using ion exchange treatment at three existing wells.

These wells will produce up to 6,000 gallons per minute (9,678 acre-feet per year) of groundwater. That is equivalent to water used by more than 10,000 households annually.

The project will also ensure a local, reliable water supply for our customers and reduce our reliance on costly imported water.

Visit the project webpage at www.yourSCVwater.com/swells, email swells@scvwa.org or call 661-705-7253 for more information. To register for the event, visit bit.ly/swellsNov2.

Agency moves to Stage 2 of its Water Shortage Contingency Plan to eliminate water waste

SANTA CLARITA – SCV Water’s Board of Directors voted Tuesday to move the Agency into Stage 2 of its Water Shortage Contingency Plan. The move comes as California and the Santa Clarita Valley continue to face a severe drought with no end in sight.

"Despite planning for dry times, this drought has become so severe that we are having to dip into our banked water supplies," said SCV Water’s General Manager Matt Stone. “Moving to Stage 2 will place new water restrictions in place to eliminate water waste and ensure we have enough water to meet the needs of our community.”

    Stage 2 Explained

Stage 2 includes the same restrictions as Stage 1 and adds additional water savings measures. Customers are requested to voluntarily reduce their water by up to 20%. This information is available at www.DroughtReadySCV.com.

New watering requirements effective with Stage 2 include:

    • Limits watering to three days per week
      • Odd addresses (Monday, Wednesday and Friday)
      • Even addresses. (Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday)
      • No watering on Saturdays
    • Limits watering station run times
      • Maximum of two five-minute cycles per station per watering day (10 minutes max.)
    • Watering times of day (morning and evening watering)

    o May to October: 12 midnight to 9 a.m. and/or 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

    o November to April: 12 midnight to 10 a.m. and/or 6 p.m. to 12 a.m.

The following actions are also prohibited, as established in Phase 1, declared in November 2021.

    • Allowing runoff onto non-irrigated areas when irrigating with potable (drinking) water
    • Using hoses with no shutoff nozzles to wash cars
    • Using potable water to wash sidewalks, driveways and hardscapes
    • Irrigating outdoors during and within 48 hours following precipitation of a quarter inch or more
    • The irrigation with potable water of ornamental turf on public street medians

    Rebates and resources available

SCV Water offers many financial rebates and other incentives to help customers increase water- use efficiency, including:

    • Turf conversion rebates
    • Irrigation system efficiency upgrade rebates (smart irrigation controllers, high-efficiency sprinkler nozzles, pressure regulating devices, drip irrigation and more)
    • Free Home Drought-Ready Check-Ups
    • Online WaterSMART Workshop, gardening classes and other resources

A quick 10-minute inspection of the sprinkler system can save considerable water. For homes businesses, and landscapes, set timers to meet the new watering days and duration and repair any leaks or overspray. Then inside, check for leaks in toilets and other fixtures.

SCV Water is hosting a Virtual Drought Forum on May 10 at 6 p.m., where attendees will hear from the experts about drought status, water supply, and conservation measures, as well as be able to ask us questions. Customers can register for the Virtual Drought Forum at bit.ly/2022VirtualDroughtForum.

Customers can also report suspected water waste at www.DroughtReadySCV.com.

Neighboring agencies announce more stringent measures

Also, this week, Metropolitan Water District announced a Water Shortage Emergency for 6 million customers, cutting watering to one day a week. This does not affect SCV Water customers. Those affected customers are served by a higher proportion of imported state water, which has been drastically impacted by three consecutive years of drought conditions.

SCV Water also relies on this source for a portion of its supply, but in addition has local groundwater and banked water supply stored underground in Kern County in wet years. Still, as the drought enters its third year, we are also asking our customers to conserve so we will have flexibility to meet demand should the drought continue. Every drop saved this year is one we can use next year.
